Nigerian stock market extends rally, investors gain N1.64tn today
The Nigerian stock market continued its upward trend on Tuesday, with investors gaining N1.639 trillion as market capitalisation rose 1.06% to close at N154.484 trillion, up from N152.845 trillion the previous session. The All-Share Index advanced 2,524 points (1.06%) to settle at 240,743.19, pushing the year-to-date return to 54.71%. Market breadth was positive, with 33 gainers and 23 losers. Airtel Africa and Guinea Insurance led the gainers, each up 10% to close at N4,358.80 and N1.10 per share, respectively. On the losers’ side, Red Star Express fell 9.96% to N24.86, while Premier Paints dropped 9.93% to N30.40. Trading activity totalled 564.9 million shares worth N39.35 billion across 49,230 deals, compared to 475.82 million shares valued at N36.49 billion on Monday. Fidelity Bank was the most actively traded stock by volume (59.37 million shares, 10.51% of total), while MTN Nigeria dominated by value with N8.02 billion in transactions (20.40% of day’s traded value). The sustained rally reflects growing bullish sentiment among investors, potentially boosting portfolio values and signalling confidence in the economy’s outlook.
For individual investors, this rally may mean unrealised gains in equity holdings, but also raises questions about sustainability and sector concentration. The strong performance of telecoms (MTN) and insurance (Guinea) alongside banking (Fidelity) highlights where money is flowing, while losses in logistics (Red Star Express) and manufacturing (Premier Paints) show uneven sector performance. Market breadth, though positive, indicates that advances are not uniformly spread across all stocks.
If you hold Nigerian equities, consider reviewing your portfolio to see if gains align with your investment goals; you might decide to take partial profits, rebalance toward underweight sectors, or hold for further upside. Will you adjust your investment strategy based on this rally, or hold for further gains?
