Nigerian Stock Market Loses N2.2 Trillion in Four Days
Nigerian stock market investors lost N2.205 trillion over four trading sessions, closing the week with a bearish trend. The market shed N475 billion on Friday alone, marking the fourth consecutive day of decline. From Tuesday to Friday, cumulative losses totaled N1.141 trillion, N74 billion, N515 billion, and N475 billion respectively. The downturn was driven by sustained profit-taking in heavyweight stocks and a 50 basis point interest rate cut by the Central Bank of Nigeria to 26.5 percent. On Friday, market capitalization fell from N124.238 trillion to N123.763 trillion (0.38% decline), and the All-Share Index dropped 741.03 points to 192,826.78. Year-to-date returns also declined to 23.91 percent. Despite the losses, market breadth closed positive with 39 gainers versus 25 losers. Sovereign Trust Insurance led gainers with a 9.95% increase, while Mecure topped losers with a 9.97% drop. Trading activity weakened, with total volume declining 5.15% to 823.83 million shares.
