Nigerian stocks lose N599bn in one day, market drops again today
The Nigerian stock market closed bearish on Tuesday, erasing N599 billion in market value as investors retreated. Market capitalisation fell 0.38% from N158.614 trillion at the open to N158.015 trillion at the close, while the All-Share Index dropped 927.7 points (0.38%) to 244,802.83. Consequently, the year‑to‑date return slipped to 57.32%. Market breadth was negative, with 40 stocks losing ground and only 13 gaining. Multiverse Mining and LivingTrust Mortgage Bank led the losers, each shedding 10% to close at N22.95 and N3.42. On the gainers’ side, AVA Capital rose 9.94% to N9.95, followed by Nigeria Real Estate Investment Trust up 9.71% to N113. Despite the decline, trading activity surged: volume jumped 69.25% to 1.56 billion shares worth N28.73 billion across 54,160 deals. Japaul Gold dominated volume, accounting for 57.89% of shares traded, while MTN Nigeria recorded the highest turnover at N3.25 billion.
This downturn signals weakening investor confidence and could affect the value of portfolios, pension funds, and savings tied to equities. The high turnover suggests active trading, possibly profit‑taking or repositioning, which may precede further volatility. For individual investors, the swing highlights the importance of diversification and a long‑term perspective; short‑term swings are normal in a market that remains up over 57% for the year.
Consider reviewing your holdings, balancing exposure across sectors, and watching macro‑economic cues such as inflation, interest rates, and oil prices. If you are uncomfortable with the current volatility, consider dollar‑cost averaging or consulting a licensed financial adviser before making any major moves.
