Nigerian student gets 27-month US prison term for gun incident involving ex and baby

Godson Oghenebrume, a 23-year-old Nigerian student in the US on an F-1 visa, was sentenced Wednesday to 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm and firing it during a confrontation with his ex-girlfriend and their infant child. The sentence was issued by US Chief Judge Shelly Dick in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The incident occurred on February 7, 2025, when Oghenebrume’s former girlfriend arrived at his apartment with their baby. Prosecutors state he was inside with another woman, triggering an argument where he discharged a Glock model 43X 9mm pistol multiple times while the baby was present. Bullet strikes were found in the apartment walls, and he allegedly smashed his ex-girlfriend’s phone before taking custody of the child.

After serving his sentence, Oghenebrume faces deportation from the United States for violating his non-immigrant visa status by possessing a firearm. Authorities confirmed he admitted to firing the weapon to scare his ex-girlfriend away during a post-Miranda interview with deputies.
