Cowrywise made unprecedented tech news by promoting 11 staff to associate VP positions in January, marking a rare milestone in Nigeria's tech ecosystem. The wealth management startup, which handles money for 2 million Nigerians, has set a new benchmark for career progression in the local tech industry.

Smartphone adoption continues growing with Nigerians purchasing 8% more devices in Q1 2026 compared to last year, driven by demand for 4G/5G phones in the ₦273,000–₦400,000 range. Transsion Holdings (Tecno, Infinix, itel) led this growth with 26% increased shipments. However, consumers face significant challenges as smartphone prices are forecast to rise by up to 30% this year, pushing mid-range Tecno phones from ₦120,000 to ₦156,000—equivalent to two months of Nigeria's ₦70,000 minimum wage.

While Nigerians consumed record 4 million terabytes of data in Q1 2026, the tech ecosystem prepares for The MarkHack 5.0 conference on June 5 in Lagos. The marketing and tech event themed "The Culture Algorithm: AI × Human Experience" will explore how AI reshapes digital engagement.

With smartphone prices rising faster than wages and tech companies expanding their footprint, how will Nigerians balance their digital needs against increasing device costs?
