Nigerians in SA to be evacuated free after xenophobic attacks
Over 1,000 Nigerians in South Africa have been screened for evacuation and will return home for free following xenophobic attacks targeting African citizens. The policy reversal comes after initial plans for returnees to pay for their own flights.
The screening process, which started June 4 and ends Saturday, involves the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and South African authorities. President Bola Tinubu has approved funding for the evacuation, with five Air Peace flights scheduled to bring Nigerians home starting next week.
Ghana has also evacuated over 300 of its citizens from South Africa amid the ongoing xenophobic attacks. For Nigerians still in South Africa interested in returning, additional screening may still be available at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria.
