Nigerians test new NIPOST digital postcode system, report accuracy and glitches
Nigerians have begun testing the Federal Government’s new National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, which went live nationwide via the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) on October 1, 2026. The GIS‑based platform assigns an 11‑character alphanumeric code to each addressable building, accessible through postcode.gov.ng or its app after enabling location services. Early users on X praised the system’s precision: business strategist Bolaji Fesomade (@MasterBolaji) said entering his street returned the exact location, while PhD student Asiwaju Oladimeji (@AsiwajuOladimej) and pastor Noah Sulaimon found the process simple and fast, believing a reliable address system will boost Nigeria’s logistics sector. Medical doctor Dr. Calafiori (@fimiletoks) echoed the accuracy, noting he would share his postcode instead of a traditional address. However, other testers reported issues. Bishop Adamu‑Chitumu (@BishopOneMagic) discovered his home shared the same postcode as a neighbouring house, and David Stephen (@davestrokes) found his actual house absent from the map, being prompted to select nearby buildings instead. A user in Oyo town said the system had no postcode for his location yet, suggesting coverage remains urban‑focused. Responding to the feedback, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani advised users to switch on their phone’s location service before searching. NIPOST guidance explains that users can select "Find My Postcode," allow location access, pick their building on the map, and receive the code; neighbouring structures can have different codes. If information linked to a postcode is wrong, users can request corrections via the app’s Edit function, with NIPOST promising review within 48 hours.
