NigeriaPledges South Sudan Peace Support
Nigeria pledges support for South Sudan peace, calling for immediate release of opposition figures including Vice President Riek Machar. President Tinubu, at the AU C-5 Plus Summit in Addis Ababa, urged the South Sudanese government to release detained opposition leaders unconditionally and convene an inclusive national dialogue. He emphasized Nigeria's commitment to accompany the Transitional Government of Unity toward lasting peace and development, stressing that without elite consensus, progress on security reforms and constitution drafting remains hindered. Nigeria also launched the Regional Partnership for Democracy to aid conflict resolution. The AU Chairman praised African leaders' determination but noted the revitalised agreement's slow implementation eight years post-endorsement. Other stakeholders including Ethiopia, Algeria, and Djibouti attended the summit.
