On Tuesday, the Central Bank of Nigeria cut its benchmark monetary policy rate by 350 basis points, lowering it from 26.5 percent to 23 percent. Governor Olayemi Cardoso described the move as an 'operational reset' aimed at aligning the reference rate with prevailing market conditions and improving monetary policy transmission under an inflation-targeting framework.

Analysts welcome the cut as broadly positive. Arnold Dublin-Green of BGL Asset Management notes it will ease borrowing costs for the Debt Management Office, likely reduce OMO bill yields, and encourage a shift from fixed income to equities, strengthening asset prices overall. He adds that the real interest rate—nominal rate minus inflation—remains strong at 7.61 percent, among the highest in sub‑Saharan Africa. Supporting factors include August consumer inflation easing to 15.39 percent, the naira gaining about eight percent against the dollar this year, and external reserves rising to $55.3 billion, an eighteen‑year peak.

Matilda Adefalujo of Meristem Securities expects OMO bills to trend toward treasury bonds and sees the lower rate as a chance for the government to lock in cheaper funding ahead of any future inflation spikes. Given these conditions, will you consider adjusting your investment portfolio toward equities, or keep a fixed‑income focus while monitoring how the naira’s stability and reserve levels evolve?
