Nigeria's domestic petrol supply rises 11% in August as Dangote refinery outperforms idle state plants
Nigeria's domestic crude oil intake by refineries jumped to 683,000 barrels per day in August 2026, up 17% from July's 585,000 bpd, according to NMDPRA data released today. Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) receipts increased 11% overall to 50.5 million litres daily, driven by a 39% surge in domestic production to 35.9 million litres while imports fell 26% to 14.6 million litres.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery powered this shift, operating at 105.21% capacity utilization and producing an average 41.94 million litres of PMS daily alongside other products. Meanwhile, all three NNPCL-owned refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna remained non-operational for the month. Modular refineries like WalterSmith (64.77% utilization) and Edo Refinery (90.43%) also contributed to domestic output.
While petrol supply improved, other products showed mixed results: Automotive Gas Oil receipts fell 39% to 14.5 million litres daily, and LPG receipts declined 19% despite rising imports. PMS stock sufficiency stood at 22.9 days, slightly up from July's 22.4 days.
With domestic petrol supply rising and import dependence decreasing, will you notice more stable fuel availability or lower pump prices at your local station in the coming weeks?
