Nigeria's electricity supply drops to 3,810MW after grid collapse
Electricity supply from Nigeria's national grid dropped to 3,810 megawatts as of Monday, January 11, 2026, according to data from the grid operator. This represents the total supply received by the eleven electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and passed to consumers.
The figure marks a significant decline from 4,330 megawatts allocated to DisCo's on January 5th, 2025—a drop of 520 megawatts in less than a week. The grid has struggled to recover since its latest collapse on December 29th, 2025, which threw the nation into darkness.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported that twenty firms sought approval to exit the national grid and secure captive power generation permits in Q3 2025, highlighting growing frustration with grid reliability.
With national supply capacity shrinking, consumers face continued power shortages. Businesses and households relying on the grid may need to consider alternative power sources like generators, solar systems, or inverters, as grid-dependent DisCos struggle to restore pre-collapse supply levels.
