What happened: Nigeria's external reserves grew by $7.09 billion since January 2, 2026, reaching $52.66 billion on August 19, according to CBN data. This marks a 15.6% increase in under eight months, after a brief dip to $48.33 billion in May. The reserves have risen steadily since, crossing $50 billion in early June and $52 billion in July.

Why it matters: A stronger external buffer gives the CBN more firepower to stabilize the naira and absorb external shocks. The naira traded around N1,346.90 per dollar on August 21, reflecting recent strength. Analysts link the rise to higher crude oil prices from the Iran‑US conflict and increased investor confidence, which together boost dollar earnings and portfolio inflows.

What you should know: The reserve growth coincided with CBN efforts to deepen the foreign exchange market, improve transparency and strengthen liquidity. In July, the MPC kept the Monetary Policy Rate at 26.5%, Cash Reserve Ratio at 45% for commercial banks and 16% for merchant banks, and the Standing Facilities Corridor at +50/-450 basis points around the MPR. With a larger cushion, Nigeria is better placed to meet international obligations and weather external economic turbulence.

Will you consider how a stronger naira might affect your import costs, travel expenses, or local purchasing power in the coming months?
