Nigeria's financial inclusion hits 73% but 75% of adults remain financially unhealthy
Sponsored content: OPay reports 99% transaction success rate in H1 2026 and 1 million+ merchants on its network as of June, while EFInA's 2026 Access to Financial Services survey shows formal financial inclusion rising to 73% (94.2 million adults) from 64% in 2023. Digital financial services usage jumped to 64.4% from 45%. Yet three in four Nigerian adults remain financially unhealthy — formal credit reaches only 10%, insurance just 5%. OPay's 99% Nigerian workforce and merchant commissions highlight digital payments' economic footprint, but the gap between transaction access and financial security persists.
The Central Bank's new ATM guidelines mandate one ATM per 7,500 cards by 2028, while Payments System Vision 2028 targets a secure, interoperable payment ecosystem. EFInA CEO Foyinsolami Akinjayeju argues inclusion should be measured by what access enables people to achieve, not accounts opened. For everyday Nigerians, digital payments are easier but building savings, accessing credit, and managing risks remain the real challenges.
If you're among the 64% using digital financial services, does your platform help you save, borrow, or insure against shocks — or just move money?
