Nigeria's Igoh Ogbu undergoes Achilles surgery, faces three-month layoff
Nigeria international defender Igoh Ogbu tore his Achilles tendon while on duty with the Super Eagles during the June 2026 international break. Medical examinations confirmed the injury, and he underwent successful surgery at the Central Military Hospital in Střešovice, Prague, as confirmed by his club Slavia Prague. The procedure went well, but Ogbu is expected to be sidelined for approximately three months while he begins rehabilitation.
The injury is a significant blow for both club and country. Since the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Ogbu has started five consecutive matches for Nigeria and played a key role in helping goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo keep back-to-back clean sheets. Under coach Eric Chelle, he has become an increasingly important figure in the Super Eagles defense. At Slavia Prague, fitness problems limited him to just nine league starts last season despite the club winning the league title.
If his recovery progresses as expected, Ogbu will likely miss the opening two months of the new season before returning to action for club and country. Fans should anticipate his absence in upcoming fixtures and monitor official updates for his return timeline.
