Nigeria's petrol, diesel, aviation fuel consumption falls sharply as prices rise
Nigeria's daily consumption of petrol fell 25% to 37.6 million litres in July from 47.4 million litres in June, according to NMDPRA's July Fact Sheet released on Monday. Diesel use dropped 9% to 14.7 million litres per day, while aviation turbine kerosene (ATK) plunged 41% to 1.7 million litres per day. The declines come as fuel prices surged: petrol sold between ₦1,131 and ₦1,350 per litre, diesel between ₦1,440 and ₦1,670 per litre, and ATK between ₦1,750 and ₦2,650 per litre in the same month. In contrast, liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) consumption rose 7% to 4.1 kilotonnes per day from 3.8 kilotonnes per day.
The drop in fuel use signals rising cost pressures on households, transporters and airlines, potentially slowing economic activity and increasing inflationary pressures. With pump prices at record highs, many Nigerians may be cutting travel, shifting to cheaper alternatives or reducing non‑essential trips.
