Nigeria's Q2 2026 GDP growth hits 4.43% but jobs lag behind sector boom
Nigeria's economy expanded by 4.43% in real terms during Q2 2026, the fastest quarterly growth since Q2 2021, according to NBS data. The services sector led with 4.60% growth, while telecommunications and information services surged 10.38%, more than double the national rate. Agriculture grew 4.39%, manufacturing 3.24%, and trade 2.40%.
Despite the headline growth, the benefits are uneven. Telecoms, though contributing ₦12.04 trillion to GDP, employs only about 500,000 people directly—a small fraction of Nigeria's labour force. In contrast, agriculture still employs over 25 million Nigerians but its growth barely matches overall GDP expansion. Manufacturing and trade, which together support massive employment, are growing slower than the economy, limiting job creation.
Structural constraints—including power shortages, poor logistics, limited access to finance, and insecurity—continue to hinder job‑rich sectors. The World Bank warns that without broader diversification and improvements in infrastructure, steady GDP growth may not translate into higher incomes for most Nigerians.
Will you rely on fast‑growing sectors like telecoms for opportunities, or push for policies that strengthen agriculture, manufacturing and trade to create the jobs Nigeria needs?
