Refined petroleum product exports jumped 66.24% quarter-on-quarter to $3.94 billion in Q2 2026, driving Nigeria's current account surplus to $7.54 billion. Total hydrocarbon earnings (crude oil, gas, refined products) reached $16.96 billion—up 29.76% from Q1 2026 and 35.14% from Q2 2025—while petroleum-related imports fell 63.1% year-on-year to $1.24 billion. Crude oil contributed $9.39 billion (55.4% of petroleum exports), gas $3.63 billion (21.4%), and refined products $3.94 billion (23.2%). The shift reflects rising domestic refining activity, particularly from the Dangote refinery, higher refined product exports (148% year-on-year increase), and reduced import dependence. Nigeria generated a net $15.72 billion from petroleum categories, strengthening the goods account surplus to $10.12 billion. The U.S. Energy Information Administration notes Nigeria's petroleum product exports rose from 46,000 barrels/day in 2023 to 146,000 barrels/day in 2024. Will sustained growth in domestic refining translate to lower fuel prices for consumers or create new jobs in the downstream sector, or will global demand fluctuations reverse this trend?
