SBM Intelligence’s latest analysis warns that Nigeria’s security crisis is expanding as insurgent groups, criminal gangs and politically linked armed actors exploit gaps in state security across the North-East, North-West, South-East, South-South and South-West. The report cites recent incidents including the inmate escape from Maiduguri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, attacks in Adamawa, political abductions in Ebonyi, a VIP ambush in Abia and ongoing activities of Boko Haram, ISWAP and Lakurawa factions.

This matters because civilians face rising kidnappings, casualties and disrupted education. The UN reported at least 1,932 people killed in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe between April and June 2026 due to insecurity and aid restrictions. Nairametrics recorded 106 violent conflict incidents from July 26 to August 8, 2026, resulting in 445 casualties and 256 kidnapping victims. Save the Children notes 1,683 learners abducted nationwide between 2014 and 2022, while UNICEF estimates 11,536 schools closed during the 2020/2021 academic session, affecting about 1.3 million children.

Readers should stay informed via official security alerts, avoid known high‑risk areas and report suspicious activity to authorities. Communities can strengthen local intelligence networks and support state presence efforts. Given that groups adapt by targeting softer, less‑protected locales when pressured, personal safety plans and vigilance remain essential.
