Nigeria's UNGA Absence Undermines Reform Calls - Expert Urges Action

Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the country at the 2026 UN General Assembly while President Bola Tinubu remained absent for the third consecutive year, continuing a pattern where large delegations attend without clear follow-up plans or accountability. Expert Dakuku Peterside argues this undermines Nigeria's credibility when advocating for UN reform and African representation, especially as the nation faces regional challenges in Sudan and the Sahel where its leadership is questioned.

The absence matters because influence abroad requires presidential presence for meaningful commitments - deputies lack authority to make binding agreements. Nigeria's calls for Security Council reform and African dignity ring hollow when leaders don't invest personal time in the causes they promote internationally, particularly amid domestic insecurity and economic struggles that weaken its global standing.

To restore credibility, Peterside proposes five priorities: future UNGA delegations should be lean, professional, and president-led when direct negotiation is needed; Nigeria must rebuild working ties with Sahel states through patient ECOWAS diplomacy; security operations must be matched with justice, local governance, and opportunity in affected communities; export earnings and public revenue should diversify while reducing dependence on essential imports; and engagement with major powers should align with national interests without becoming captive to any single power. Each requires clear ownership, resources, and measurable timelines for progress reporting.
