Nigeria's Wheat Production Jumps to 420,000 Tonnes Yearly via NAGS-AP
Nigeria's annual wheat production increased from 120,000 to 420,000 metric tonnes—a 250% rise—due to the NAGS-AP program providing subsidized seeds, fertilizers, and extension services through agro-dealers, Prof. Ademola Adenle told NAN in Abuja. The Federal Government launched this dry-season wheat initiative in November 2025 targeting 80,000 farmers nationwide, projecting N160 billion in output value.
Despite gains, Adenle cited Nigeria's 1978 Land Use Act as blocking farmland access for smallholders (typically farming 0.5-2 hectares), limiting expansion. Planned reforms aim to overhaul land administration alongside value chain improvements in processing and marketing. This follows September 2025's $3.14 billion Hand-in-Hand Initiative with FAO to boost agricultural productivity.
Sustaining higher wheat output depends on resolving land constraints while maintaining input access—critical for reducing Nigeria's import reliance. Will land reform efforts translate to lower bread prices for consumers, or will structural barriers keep wheat costs high?
