NiMet flashes flood alert for 26 states + FCT July 11-20 as soils saturate
NiMet issued a flash flood warning for 26 states and the FCT effective July 11-20, 2026, citing persistent rainfall that has saturated soils nationwide, preventing further absorption. Affected northern states include Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi; southern states listed are Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa, plus Abuja.
The agency warns that continued rain on waterlogged ground will likely trigger flash floods, posing highest danger to low-lying communities, urban centers with poor drainage, and areas near waterways. Residents in these zones face risks to life, property, and displacement as seen in past flood seasons.
Heed NiMet’s alerts: avoid flooded roads and bridges, move valuables to higher ground, prepare emergency kits with food/water/medicine, and monitor local radio for updates. With soils already saturated, will you act now by clearing drains or planning alternate routes, or wait until floods hit?
