NiMet forecasts thunderstorms and moderate rains across Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday, with northern states like Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Taraba and Adamawa expecting early morning light rains and afternoon thunderstorms; north‑central areas including Kwara, Niger, Kogi and the FCT facing similar morning showers and evening storms; and southern regions such as Oyo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom seeing morning light rains followed by moderate rains later over Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. The agency warns that storms may bring strong winds and urges residents, motorists and airline operators to take precautions as the weather develops.
The forecast raises flood concerns, especially after NIHSA issued a seven‑day advisory warning of medium flood risk in 17 states—Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara. Recent floods have shown how blocked drainage and rapid urbanisation leave low‑lying communities vulnerable, and the National Economic Council has approved ₦83.2 billion under the Anticipatory Action Task Force to boost flood preparedness.
