Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) announced on Wednesday via its X account that widespread rainfall and thunderstorms are expected across most of Nigeria on Thursday, 10 July 2026. In the north, states such as Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba will see morning clouds with possible thunderstorms and light rain, while later in the day Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno and Taraba may experience isolated thunderstorms with moderate rain, lightning and strong winds. The North Central region – Niger, Kwara, Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa and the FCT – will see morning thunderstorms with light rain, followed by more widespread storms and moderate rainfall later. In the south, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti will have morning rain that spreads to most southern states by afternoon and evening, raising the risk of localized flooding in low‑lying areas.

The warning matters because heavy rain, strong winds and reduced visibility can disrupt travel, cause flash floods, and endanger lives and property. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, avoid driving or walking through floodwaters, and refrain from sheltering under tall trees during thunderstorms due to lightning risk. Airline operators should obtain airport‑specific weather reports from NiMet to ensure safe flights.

Will you adjust your travel plans, protect your property from possible flooding, or heed the safety advice to stay indoors during the storms?
