Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a public health advisory on March 13, 2026, warning of heightened cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) risk in 11 northern states due to intensifying dry season conditions. High-risk states include Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno. The disease spreads through respiratory droplets in crowded or poorly ventilated environments and can become life-threatening within hours if untreated. Symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light. NiMet urges residents in central Nigeria to report symptoms early and emphasizes vaccination as the most effective prevention method. Children, young adults, and those in overcrowded areas are most vulnerable. Nigeria previously received one million meningitis vaccines in April 2025 to combat outbreaks, with continued vaccination campaigns critical to containment.
