Nigeria's National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) has trained 50 young scientists through the World Bank-funded IMPACT Project to strengthen local pharmaceutical capacity and reduce dependence on imported medicines. The two-day workshop focused on research and development, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and sustainable drug development, addressing lessons from COVID-19 disruptions that exposed weaknesses in global supply chains. Director-General Obi Adigwe emphasized medicine security as a national security priority, stating Nigeria must meet its own medical needs during crises rather than rely on external supplies. The initiative aims to bridge academia-industry gaps, equipping scientists with skills to produce WHO-prequalified medicines and combat fake/substandard drugs. Participants like Uzuh Nwakaego highlighted the goal of translating lab research into patient solutions, while Folashade Alabi noted the program's role in positioning Nigeria competitively in global pharmaceutical markets.
