NLC Criticizes Security, Economic Conditions in Sallah Message
Nigeria Labour Congress, led by Joe Ajaero, criticized deteriorating security and economic conditions in a Sallah message issued Wednesday ahead of Eid-el-Kabir. The union said Nigerian workers and the poor are 'bleeding under the weight of neoliberal policies' that have deepened poverty and called on political leaders to reflect on the consequences of their economic decisions.
NLC also urged the government to address insecurity across the country, citing kidnappings, bandit attacks, and communal violence as evidence of governance failures. The labor body called on Nigerians to use the Eid period for 'political education, grassroots organizing, and building a united front of the oppressed.'
The statement comes amid growing criticism of President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms, including fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange liberalization, which have contributed to soaring inflation and rising costs. NLC signaled an increasingly political posture ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that Nigerian workers would hold leaders accountable at the ballot box against 'anti-people policies.'
