The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to immediately cut petrol prices, pay a wage award to workers nationwide and start talks on a new national minimum wage. In its Independence Day message signed by President Joe Ajaero on Wednesday, the union said petrol now sells at ₦1,430 per litre or higher in major cities and even more in remote areas, driving up transport fares, food, rent and school fees while wages remain stagnant. The NLC stressed that a wage award is not charity but an emergency intervention to halt the collapse of real income, referencing the October 2023 agreement that promised federal workers a monthly ₦35,000 award, with states and local governments encouraged to match it. The union warned that without cutting the chain of rising fuel costs and stagnant wages, any effort to ease suffering will fail. How would a ₦35,000 monthly wage award and lower fuel prices change your household expenses—would you save, pay off debt, or adjust your spending?
