As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the National Orientation Agency calls for renewed commitment to national unity and development. Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu said independence gave Nigerians the opportunity to determine their own destiny, acknowledging steady progress despite challenges while urging citizens to recognise achievements and address areas needing improvement. "The progress of our country depends not only on what the government does, but also on what each of us contributes as citizens," he stated.

Issa-Onilu stressed that government alone cannot build the desired Nigeria, calling for greater participation, cooperation and commitment from citizens in supporting national development efforts. With the 2027 general elections drawing nearer, he urged Nigerians to protect peace and unity by respecting political differences, rejecting hate speech and violence, and resolving disagreements through lawful and democratic means. Political competition should not undermine the bonds uniting Nigerians, he said, promoting issue-based engagement and upholding the rule of law before, during and after elections.

Beyond the anniversary, he enjoined Nigerians to sustain independence gains through increased productivity, self-reliance and responsible citizenship, emphasizing every Nigerian's role in building a stronger nation through productive work, respect for national values, peaceful coexistence and positive community contributions. The NOA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting patriotism, national unity and responsible citizenship while providing accurate information on government programmes and encouraging constructive participation in national development.
