Northwest Nigeria's seven governors presented the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework 2026-2030 to development institutions and private investors in New York on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, seeking financing and partnerships to tackle insecurity, create jobs and improve social services. The plan, adopted in March 2026 with UNDP technical support and German government funding, covers Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara.

The framework targets agriculture and livestock, renewable energy, trade infrastructure, technology and social services. Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, who chairs the Northwest Governors' Forum, said security must be accompanied by opportunity and urged coordinated financing across the seven states. He noted that displacement from attacks—3,509 people from 524 households in Katsina on 6 and 8 August 2026—shows the urgency of linking stabilisation with development.

UNDP said it will help coordinate implementation, strengthen institutions and develop bankable projects, though no overall funding target or specific pledges were disclosed at the meeting. Success could improve livelihoods in a region vital to national food production and trade, while failure would leave poverty and insecurity unchecked.

Investors and development partners can watch for upcoming calls for proposals from the states or UNDP, particularly in the priority sectors listed, and consider how their capital might align with the framework's accountability and coordination requirements.
