Norwegian FA to complain to FIFA over Trump's role in Balogun red card reversal
Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) says it will lodge a formal complaint with FIFA over claims that former U.S. President Donald Trump personally pressed FIFA President Gianni Infantino to rescind the red card suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun. Balogun received a red card in the USA's 2-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32, which would have ruled him out of the last-16 clash against Belgium. Days later, FIFA lifted the 12-month suspension without a formal appeal, citing a regulation that allows penalty suspensions to be waived, but gave no further justification.
NFF President Lise Klaveness called the move a 'mistake' that jeopardizes the sport's integrity, saying the decision appeared swayed by external influence and bypassed proper procedure. She noted this follows Norway's earlier complaint about FIFA awarding Trump its inaugural Peace Prize before the tournament, stressing that powerful outside voices should not dictate disciplinary outcomes. The federation intends to raise the matter at its next board meeting and submit an ethics complaint to FIFA.
The complaint will be reviewed by FIFA's ethics committee; if upheld, it could prompt clearer rules on how suspensions may be lifted and reinforce that disciplinary decisions must be based solely on on-field incidents.
