The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Muyi Aina, announced that 4,434 Primary Healthcare Centres across Nigeria have been either completed or are nearly finished under a revitalisation programme. He said 3,526 facilities have already been renovated, commissioned and handed over to states and local governments, while work continues in another 908 centres. The upgrades include reliable electricity, solar power systems, water supply and sanitation infrastructure, aiming to improve service readiness from the poor condition found when the administration began health sector reforms.

Aina explained the revitalisation followed an equity lens, considering existing access, alternative providers, distance and available options to ensure fair distribution across the 36 states and nearly every local government area. The agency is targeting one Level-2 PHC in each electoral ward and 8,800 Level-1 facilities nationwide. He added that 53 percent of the 27,000 PHCs under active engagement are now functional, with Level-2 centres up 59 percent since March 2024. To boost transparency, NPHCDA launched a live, geocoded dashboard on its website where Nigerians can locate the nearest centre and view its services.

With the dashboard accessible online, citizens can check which PHCs offer maternity care, immunisation or outpatient services before visiting. Aina urged Nigerians to use the tool to plan healthcare trips and hold officials accountable for facility upkeep. The programme’s completion will expand quality primary care access, especially in underserved communities, reducing reliance on distant tertiary hospitals for routine needs.
