OAU Teaching Hospital Doctors Join National Strike
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) has officially joined the nationwide strike action. The decision was reached during an emergency general meeting held on January 7, 2026. The strike is in compliance with the directive from the national leadership of the association to press the Federal Government for better conditions of service.
The local chapter of the ARD highlighted severe local issues fueling their participation. In a statement signed by the President, Dr. Jesunbo Martins, and Secretary, Dr. Toyyeb Oladipo, the association revealed that about 83 resident doctors in OAUTHC are facing financial hardship. Specifically, 40 members are owed salary arrears ranging from 10 to 14 months, while another 40 constitute a separate group also owed salaries from March of the previous year.
The doctors stated that this prolonged non-payment has subjected their members to severe psychological and professional hardship. They have conditioned the suspension of their strike on the meeting of their demands, which include the immediate payment of all outstanding salary arrears and the reinstatement of disengaged colleagues at other federal hospitals. This strike significantly impacts healthcare delivery at the teaching hospital in Ile-Ife.
