Obasanjo explains why he now admires Charly Boy despite initial reservations
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo revealed in a Thursday interview on the "Before Tomorrow Comes" podcast (posted on YouTube) why he came to admire veteran entertainer Charles "Charly Boy" Oputa. He said he first knew Charly Boy through his father, the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, whom Obasanjo called a close friend and admired. Initially, Obasanjo did not support Charly Boy’s unconventional lifestyle and even scorned him, expecting the son of a Supreme Court judge to be well‑groomed and immaculate.
Obasanjo noted that his view changed when he observed how Charly Boy cared for his aging father despite his eccentric dressing and behavior, describing it as extraordinary. He added that after the deaths of both parents, his relationship with Charly Boy deepened, and he now sees the entertainer’s unique path as a lesson for parents: if a child chooses a non‑criminal path that comes naturally, they should offer guidance and prayer.
Obasanjo also announced he authored the foreword to Charly Boy’s memoir titled "999: The Memoir of Charly Boy", which he praised as well written and a masterpiece. The book chronicles the singer’s life and their relationship.
What lessons might parents draw from supporting their children’s unconventional but lawful ambitions?
