Former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Musa Kwankwaso have formally joined Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Abuja today, May 3, 2026. The two leaders, who defected from African Democratic Congress (ADC), received membership cards after a closed-door meeting with NDC leaders, welcomed by former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson.

This move comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi contested the 2023 election under Labour Party, while Kwankwaso ran under New Nigeria People's Party. Their defection represents significant consolidation of opposition figures ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Political analysts view this as part of a broader strategy to form a stronger alternative platform for the 2027 elections. With both candidates securing significant vote shares in the 2023 polls, their combined influence could reshape the political landscape. Will this consolidation translate into a more unified opposition capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027?
