Ohanaeze urges FG to open structured political dialogue with South-East ahead of 2027 polls
The Global Executive Committee of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, to immediately initiate a structured political dialogue with Ndigbo ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued on Tuesday by factional Deputy President-General Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Acting Secretary-General Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Ohanaeze insisted that the Igbo need clarity on what is on the table for them before another electoral cycle. The organisation said the South-East cannot approach the 2027 polls based on assumptions, political rhetoric or undefined promises. Ohanaeze demanded clear answers on equitable political representation, state creation, rail connectivity, maritime development, economic integration, national reconciliation and the future of the South-East within the Nigerian federation. It specifically asked the Federal Government to state clearly whether it supports the creation of an additional state in the South-East, stressing that its demand is for clarity, accountability and open negotiation, not political favour. Ohanaeze said meaningful political engagement requires both sides to understand what is being offered, what is being requested and what can realistically be delivered. The call comes amid growing political activity as parties prepare for the 2027 elections and various regional groups voice their expectations. Will the Federal Government heed this call for dialogue, and what specific concessions—such as backing an additional South-East state or concrete infrastructure commitments—would satisfy Igbo demands and shape the political landscape ahead of 2027?
