Oil prices rise again as Iran tensions overshadow Middle East export improvements

Oil prices rose on Wednesday October 5 2026 amid fresh concerns about Iran stepping up attacks in the Strait of Hormuz despite earlier improvements in Middle East exports. UK Maritime Trade Operations reported nine tanker attacks in the waterway this month alone representing half of September's total for the region.

This follows a trend where Brent crude had fallen below $100 and WTI below $90 earlier in the week as exports from Middle East countries excluding Iran returned toward pre-war levels easing inflation concerns and giving central banks room to delay interest rate hikes. However prices rebounded on Tuesday when data showed Tehran increased strikes on vessels in the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping lane.

For Nigeria as a major oil producer these fluctuations directly impact government revenue foreign exchange reserves and domestic fuel prices. The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20% of global oil trade making any disruption there immediately felt in Nigerian oil markets and national budget planning.

Will you expect higher fuel costs at the pump soon or believe Nigeria's foreign reserves can absorb these external shocks without significant adjustment to the 2026 budget?
