Former Super Eagles midfielder Jay-Jay Okocha attributes Nigerian footballers' success in European leagues to their ambition and drive, contrasting with South African players who he says are too comfortable at home. Okocha cites examples like Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen (Lille, Napoli), Atletico Madrid's Ademola Lookman, and Sevilla's Akor Adams as evidence of Nigeria's consistent production of top-tier talent across elite European competitions including the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, and Serie A. In an interview with Thabisa Mosia on Radio 2000, Okocha stated: 'To truly excel, you must aspire to become the best version of yourself. South African players are too comfortable at home, and that drive is not really there. But we Nigerians are very ambitious. We like to challenge ourselves.' Okocha's own career spanned Germany, Turkey, France, and England, demonstrating the international success pattern he describes.
