Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu renewed the country’s pledge to eliminate malaria as the world marked World Malaria Day 2026. She highlighted the 2026 theme—“Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must”—which calls for sustained collaboration, increased domestic financing, and innovative solutions to overcome drug resistance and unequal healthcare access.

Nigeria carries 27% of the global malaria burden, with about 68 million cases each year, according to the WHO 2022 report. Transmission happens year-round, peaking in the northern and north-eastern regions where incidence is highest, while the south sees perennial spread.

Tinubu urged stronger prevention, wider access to life‑saving interventions, and warned that vulnerable communities must not be left behind. She said unity can achieve a malaria‑free world. Individuals can help by using bed nets, seeking prompt treatment, and supporting local health programs.
