One year after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed Nigeria’s landmark tax reform laws, the Nigeria Revenue Service collected ₦21.6 trillion in tax revenue from January to June 2026, a 49 percent increase over the ₦14.27 trillion collected in the same period of 2025. In June alone, VAT revenue reached ₦799.75 billion, total statutory revenue hit ₦3.701 trillion, and gross revenue amounted to ₦4.501 trillion, with ₦2.55 trillion distributed to federal, state and local governments via FAAC. These figures continue a three‑year upward trend: ₦10.1 trillion in 2023, ₦21.6 trillion in 2024 and ₦36.8 trillion in 2025. The reforms simplified the tax system, removed double taxation, boosted compliance through technology and electronic invoicing, and strengthened enforcement against leakages.

Why does this matter to you? Stronger tax revenue gives the government more funds to invest in roads, schools, hospitals, security, agriculture and digital infrastructure, reducing reliance on borrowing and improving public services that affect daily life. It also boosts investor confidence, as seen in Nigeria’s stock market performance, and can create a more stable economic environment for businesses and job seekers.

What should you know or do? Consider how improved public services might affect your household or business—better roads could lower transport costs, reliable power could boost productivity, and improved schools could benefit your children. Staying informed about tax obligations and taking advantage of any available incentives or simplification measures can help you comply easily and potentially benefit from a more efficient system. Monitor how increased revenue translates into visible projects in your community and hold leaders accountable for delivering on the promise of inclusive growth.
