Onyeka: Super Eagles won't underestimate Mozambique in Monday's AFCON clash
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has warned Nigeria against complacency despite their perfect group stage record ahead of Monday's Round of 16 AFCON clash against Mozambique in Morocco. Onyeka, who has played only once in the tournament—starting the 79 minutes in their five-goal thriller against Tunisia—emphasized that the team's strong showing stems from fierce competition for places, team unity, and the desire to make Nigerians proud.
The 26-year-old FC Ebedei player, who scored crucial goals in 2026 World Cup qualifying against Benin and DR Congo, highlighted the depth of talent in the squad. 'Yes, competition helps the team in a good way. There are a lot of skilled players, especially in the middle of the field, and also on the sides. It's good for the team,' Onyeka said. He pointed to their 1-0 win over Uganda as proof: 'Many players didn't play against Uganda, but we still managed to win the game. That shows we have really good players.'
Onyeka stressed that the players share responsibility with the coaching staff for Nigeria's improvement. 'The players are very dedicated, and the coaching team is just as focused. Everyone wants to win this AFCON and ensure that Nigerians get something out of it,' he added. Despite finishing group play with nine points, he insists the team must stay focused on Mozambique, not look ahead to quarterfinals. 'We need to stay calm and focus on the next round, on ourselves, not just the opponents,' Onyeka said, adding the team will play with full strength and trust in God for victory. The midfielder also confirmed he's training and ready for Monday's match.
