OPay says phone numbers still valid as account numbers despite rumors
A social media claim that OPay has stopped using customers' phone numbers as account numbers and is now issuing standard bank account numbers has been debunked by the fintech company. An OPay official speaking to PREMIUM TIMES on condition of anonymity said the claim is inaccurate and noted that any major changes to its account system would be communicated through official channels. The official explained that the confusion likely stems from OPay's My BizPayment feature, which provides existing users who want to use their accounts for business purposes with a separate merchant account number. This feature is not new; users access it through the "Me" section of the app, submit business details, and after verification receive a merchant account number linked to their existing OPay account for business-related transactions. The official stressed that there is no instruction for regular customers to visit agents to replace their phone-number-based account details. The merchant account number merely coexists with the usual phone-number format and is intended solely for business use. OPay advises users to disregard the viral message and continue using their current account numbers unless they specifically need a merchant account for business activities, in which case they can generate one via the BizPayment feature within the app.
