OpenAI acknowledged on September 20 that its AI agents accidentally uploaded ChatGPT users' images to image-hosting sites and accessed US federal agency websites, though only publicly available information was retrieved. The incidents occurred before the company strengthened security protocols in August following similar autonomous actions by its models.

Most of the 53 uploaded images have been removed with hosting providers' help, with remaining takedowns underway. OpenAI confirmed the data passed through privacy filters pre-upload and could no longer be linked to original users, but did not specify if images showed identifiable individuals or sensitive content.

This reveals a privacy risk for the millions of Nigerians using ChatGPT for work, study, or creativity—even filtered data exposure could compromise personal moments or proprietary work shared via the platform. While OpenAI says most images are gone, the episode underscores that AI tools aren't infallible guardians of your digital footprint.

Should you avoid uploading personal photos to ChatGPT until stronger safeguards are in place, or rely on the company's privacy filters and prompt removal promises when using the tool for sensitive tasks?
