OpenAI has introduced lockdown mode, a new security feature designed to protect sensitive data from prompt injection attacks by restricting web access and external capabilities. The advanced setting limits tools that can connect to the web or external services, reducing the risk of information extraction through prompt injections.

Available to users on business plans including Free, Go, Plus, Pro and self-serve ChatGPT, the feature is intended for individuals and organizations requiring stricter controls over how sensitive data is accessed and transmitted. Several capabilities are disabled in lockdown mode: live web browsing is limited to cached content, while deep research, agent mode, network-enabled Canvas functions, and file downloads for analysis are blocked. Manually uploaded files remain accessible.

Users can activate lockdown mode through the security section of their account settings, while enterprise administrators can configure custom lockdown roles and assign them to individual users or groups. The company cautions that the feature doesn't prevent prompt injections from appearing in cached content or uploaded files, which could still affect response behavior or accuracy. Will this security setting become essential for Nigerian businesses handling sensitive customer data, or is the functionality limitation too restrictive for everyday operations?
