Former Progressive Governors Forum Director-General Salihu Lukman says opposition leaders are being presented with a framework to unite behind a single candidate for the 2027 presidential election, aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the APC. In an Arise News interview, Lukman stressed that the opposition’s real opponent is the APC, not each other, and that any united candidate must emerge from agreed‑on criteria, not a mere declaration.

He explained that the proposal asks leaders to decide what conditions a candidate must meet to win the election, emphasizing that the goal is a credible option Nigerians can confidently support to vote out Tinubu’s administration. Lukman, who previously served in the APC, said the structure would enable opposition parties to function as a cohesive unit and present a united front by the 2027 polls.

The push comes amid growing calls for a credible alternative to the ruling party, with many voters dissatisfied with current economic and security challenges. If the opposition succeeds in uniting, it could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape and offer voters a genuine choice; otherwise, a fragmented opposition risks another APC victory.

What criteria do you think should define a united opposition candidate, and how might a consolidated opposition affect your vote in 2027?
