Opposition urged to unite and safeguard votes ahead of 2027 elections
Dr Ibrahim Modibbo, a public affairs analyst, urged opposition parties to unite and develop a coordinated strategy to protect votes in the 2027 elections, speaking on Arise TV on Tuesday. He said votes cast at polling units must be properly counted and that the results announced by electoral authorities must tally with those recorded and transmitted through INEC’s Result Viewing (IReV) portal.
He warned that weaknesses in the collation and verification process often arise after voting ends, eroding public confidence in elections. Modibbo stressed that opposition parties, their agents, and citizens must remain vigilant throughout the process, work with INEC and security agencies, and ensure that technological tools are used correctly to safeguard democracy.
He recommended that opposition parties set up joint monitoring units at polling stations and collation centers, while citizens use the IReV portal to verify results and report any discrepancies. Technology can help, but active oversight by parties and voters is essential to address issues as they arise.
Will opposition parties heed the call to unite and monitor the collation process, or risk another election marred by distrust?
