Oracle disclosed in its latest annual report that it shed approximately 21,000 roles globally over the past year, reducing its full-time headcount from about 162,000 to 141,000 employees as of May 31, 2026—a roughly 13% workforce reduction. The restructuring cost $1.8 billion in severance and restructuring charges, nearly five times the $374 million spent the previous financial year. Oracle attributed the downsizing to the deployment of AI technologies across its operations and warned that further layoffs may occur as the reorganisation continues.

This trend matters for Nigerian tech professionals and job seekers because it reflects a broader AI-driven shift across the global technology industry, where companies like Amazon and Meta are also cutting thousands of jobs while investing heavily in AI infrastructure. For Nigerians working remotely for multinational firms or aiming to enter such roles, the tightening job market signals increased competition and a growing premium on AI, cloud, and data‑analytics skills.

Oracle noted that the full scale of the layoffs was not publicly confirmed until the annual report was filed, though senior employees had been posting about "significant" cuts since April. The company cautioned that the reorganisation can be disruptive and may lead to shortages of skilled workers in certain roles, potentially affecting productivity losses to stay competitive, consider upskilling in AI‑related fields, monitoring hiring patterns on job portals, and exploring opportunities in companies expanding their AI teams.
