Osinbajo reveals why he stopped drinking alcohol
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has shared how meeting a UN colleague in Mogadishu, Somalia led him to stop drinking alcohol many years ago.
Osinbajo, who is a born-again Christian and pastor, explained he was struggling to reconcile his faith with alcohol consumption. "I was really sure that Jesus turned water into wine, so why shouldn't I drink?" he recounted.
The turning point came when he went to a restaurant in the UN compound in Mogadishu and saw his colleagues hiding their drinks when he entered. A Danish colleague told him: "You know, you're the priest, we mustn't be drinking where the priest is."
"That immediately occurred to me that there was no way I could be drinking there," Osinbajo shared. "How does the priest drink?" he reflected, noting that it became clear to him that "all things may be lawful, but not all things are helpful." From that moment forward, Osinbajo said he hasn't touched alcohol.
