Paris Women's Fashion Week for Spring-Summer 2027 opened yesterday with 67 catwalk shows planned, featuring debuts from South Africa's MaXhosa Africa and Canadian label Matières Fécales. The event highlights African fashion's growing global presence as MaXhosa, founded by Laduma Ngxokolo in 2010 to promote Xhosa traditions, joined the official programme after previous private showings in Paris, counting Michelle Obama and Beyoncé among its fans.

However, the luxury sector faces commercial headwinds following the post-Covid boom, with reports suggesting potential departures of creative directors at Saint Laurent (Anthony Vaccarello), Balenciaga (Pierpaolo Piccioli) and Chloe (Chemena Kamali) over profitability struggles. In contrast, Chanel's Matthieu Blazy has generated significant buzz and sales frenzy since taking helm last year.

For Nigerian designers observing Africa's rising fashion moment, this presents a critical consideration: Should they focus on exporting authentic cultural heritage like MaXhosa does, or adapt more closely to international luxury market demands to ensure commercial viability in an increasingly challenging environment?
