Partial National Grid Collapse Plunges Southeast into Darkness
Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) announced a partial national grid collapse at 11:54 a.m. Thursday, causing power outages in Southeast states served by subsidiaries MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra, and EastLand. The cause remains unknown, though maintenance at Seplat Energy and Nigerian National Petroleum Company gas pipeline repairs contributed to nationwide electricity drops. Restoration efforts are underway. Affected areas include parts of Abuja, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kogi, which retain power. This marks the second national grid collapse in January 2026.
