Pastor Kumuyi denies plans to hand over Deeper Life church to his son
Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi has denied rumors that he plans to hand over leadership of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry to one of his sons. Speaking during a church service on June 10, 2026, he said the speculation that he would look for his first or second son to take over the ministry is false. Kumuyi stressed that the church belongs to Jesus Christ, not to his family, and that its leaders should be chosen by God, not through family lines. He noted that people had asked whether he would prepare one of his children to lead the ministry, but he rejected the idea, stating that the church is not his personal property. He added, 'Well, it’s not his church. And since it wasn’t his church, Jesus said, “Upon this rock, I will build my church.” It’s the church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and no one has the right to give it to his son.' Kumuyi also pointed to biblical examples, saying Peter did not give the church to his son, Paul had no son but did not pass the church on, and John did not give the church to his son. The denial comes amid public curiosity about the future leadership of one of Nigeria’s largest evangelical congregations. For members and observers, the clarification puts to rest concerns about hereditary succession and reinforces the ministry’s teaching that spiritual leadership is divinely appointed.
